Giovanni Tesio
Giovanni Tesio was born in 1946 and taught Italian Literature at the Università del Piemonte Orientale in Vercelli until his retirement. A leading scholar of dialectal literature, he is considered the most authoritative expert of Piedmontese poetry. Two more collections of sonnets followed, Piture parolà (Worded Paintings) (2018) and Nosgnor (Our Lord) (2020) as well as a long poem on Christmas, Natal piemontèis (A Piedmontese Christmas) (2021).

CLXVII
Lord, I am ready whether you exist or not,
if you call me I will not say no
and I will come, will come, that you speak is enough,
and I will come, I say again, without quarrels.
I’ve been lucky in my life
and if I did anything silly,
really dark things I never did
and if I bent, I never broke.
Lord, in whom I believe and sometimes I believe not,
Lord whom I feel and sometimes I feel not,
listen to me, I’m calling you, don’t abandon me.
I know that saying Lord won’t be enough
but I also know that your light won’t go out
and your mercy will not fail me.
